Gems lose, again

By Lawrence Trusida

The senior netball team, The Gems, lost their third match at the ongoing Africa Netball Championship after being thumped 73-47 by heavyweights Uganda.

The Gems have had a rough start to their campaign Africa Netball Championship campaign as they have faced the top three ranked team on the continent, South Africa, Malawi and Uganda in their first five matches.

In between those heavyweights the Gems have managed to get two wins against Tanzania and the host Namibia.

After playing five games in five days at the just ended Pent Series and now having played another five games in five days with just three days’ rest in between the tournaments, Zina believes that fatigue is catching up.

“We started well and fizzled out in between. Our attack was okay, but the defence was found wanting. It is purely fatigue. We have played 10 games inside 13 days and coming from a background of no competition, we are doing the best we can. We could have done better, but this is still commendable,” Zimbabwe Netball Association President Leticia Chipandu noted.

The Gems have two remaining games in the next couple of days against Botswana and Kenya.
