The Zimbabwe senior netball team, the Gems, kicked off their Africa Netball Championships campaign on a poor note after crushing to a 78-27 defeat by South Africa in Windhoek, Namibia, this Tuesday.
VOICE: With defending champions South Africa coming into the tournament as the favourites defeat was probably expected, but it is the margin of the loss which surprised all.
The Gems lost by 51 points to the World number three ranked side in the two teams’ opening match at the Africa Netball Championships.
The Proteas of South Africa took the first shot but the Gems were not buckling down and fought neck for neck to end the first quarter trailing by five points.
The second quarter saw the Gems continuing with the fight but the heavyweights were slowly pulling away and went to the halftime leading 35-21.
The gulf between the two sides was evident in the second half as the Gems only managed to put in six points compared to South Africa’s 43.
The Gems will be seeking redemption when they take on hosts Namibia in their second match this Wednesday.
In other results, Malawi thumped Zambia 70-36, while Uganda made light work of Tanzania with a 77-29 victory.
