NETBALL: Gems lose to Malawi

By Sports Reporter
THE Zimbabwe Netball team, the Gems, succumbed to a 56-38 loss to
Malawi in their opening match of Pent series tournament which tipped off in Namibia this Monday.
The Gems opened the 2021 Africa Pent series campaign with a date against Malawi at Patrick Iyambo Police College in Namibia this Monday.
The Gems looked visibly tired after arriving in Windhoek on match day and against a dominant Queens team, they came out stuck.
Zimbabwe had the first shot but Malawian goal shooter Joyce Mvula had the final say as she was a constant menace to the Zimbabwean defence and would eventual take a 14-8 first quarter lead.
Malawi started pulling ahead in the second quarter and opened up a 15-point lead going into halftime.
The Gems tried to rally back but Malawi maintained their grip on the game and eventually saw out the match at 14-point gap.
Zimbabwe need to quickly regroup as they face Kenya this Tuesday.
Six countries Namibia, Zambia, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe will battle for honours at the Pent series before South Africa joins them for the African championships which start on the 9th in the same city.
Zimbabwe is currently ranked 12th in the world and will be hoping to do well at the two tournaments to keep alive their hopes of making it to the 2023 Netball World Cup set for South Africa.
