The Zimbabwe boxing fraternity has been plunged into mourning after young professional, Taurai Zimunya died in the early hours of Monday morning as a result of head injuries sustained in a bantamweight contest which took place at Body Active Gym in Borrowdale, Harare, on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Zimunya collapsed in the third round of his fight against Tinashe Majoni and was immediately rushed to hospital on life support.
The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board confirmed the sad news although the medical report on the cause of death is yet to be released.
In Karate the 2021 Kurai Kofukani Tournament was held this Saturday at the Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza with athletes from Bulawayo, Kwekwe, Harare, Chitungwiza and Marondera participating.
The tourney opened with the Masters Kumite Category which was won by Sensei Moodle Chola from Zambia with Zimbabwe’s Sensei Vacson Dube coming first in the Kata category.
Gerald Muusha clinched a double in The Veterans Kata and the Senior Men’s Kata while Winston Nyanhete secured the Veterans Kumite.
In the juniors, Matthew Thomas was the winner in the 10 to 11 years Boys Kata.
Lerato Mashingaidze represented women after winning the under 21 Girls Kata and Kumite competitions.
The tourney was the fitness test ahead of the upcoming World Championship in Dubai followed by the Japanese Ambassador Cup next month.
