FC Platinum saved the best for last after beating Ngezi Platinum by two goals to one at Mandava Stadium to go through to the Chibuku Super Cup quarter finals as group winners.
It was a clash of the best at Mandava Stadium this Saturday with Ngezi platinum going into their encounter against FC Platinum with a psychological advantage after winning the reverse fixture.
The first half was however a subdued affair with both sides taking a cautious approach.
Ngezi Platinum could have drawn first blood through Wellington Taderera but his effort was saved by FC Platinum goalkeeper and Captain Petros Mhari.
Moments later promising FC Platinum young star Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya dispossessed Ngezi Platinum goalkeeper Nelson Chadya and hit the upright from an acute angle with a yawning net in front of him.
Six minutes into the second half, midfielder Innocent Mucheneka reminded coach Norman Mapeza of his worth when he headed home a perfectly delivered Panase Mutimbanyoka cross.
Ngezi leveled matters after FC Platinum defender Lawrence Mhlanga handled inside the box.
Up stepped Nigel Hippo Makumbe to take the penalty but it was saved by Mhari before Bruno Mtigo scored from the rebound to make it one-all.
The game was put to bed by Rainsome Pavari who scored FC platinum’s winning goal taking their tally to13 points, the same number of points as Ngezi who finished second in the group due to an inferior goal difference.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for Ngezi Platinum coach Rodwell Dhlakama while FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza lauded his charges.
It’s not easy to accept defeat. We could have buried this game during the first half,said Dhlakama..
I am happy for the boys especially Thandolwenkosi upfront .The team has depth as you saw I made changes to the team but we still won,noted Mapeza.
In other matches played this Saturday, Cranborne Bullets beat Tenax one-nil at Sakubva, Manica Diamonds and Black Rhinos drew one- all at Baobab while ZPC Kariba got the better of Yadah one- nil at the National Sports Stadium.
