Preparations for the National Paralympic games are at an advanced stage, with the tournament set for December in Harare.

Special Olympics Zimbabwe (SOZ) is the national body that caterers for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

In 2019, Zimbabwe took part at the World Games in Abu Dhabi and had a brilliant performance, bringing back 15 medals.

But there has not been any activity since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The good news is that the national games will bounce back as part of preparations for the 2023 World Games in Berlin.

“We are delighted with the work on the ground, the preparations are at an advanced stage. Provincial qualifiers have already started,” National Director of Special Olympics Zimbabwe Lilian Chikara said.

The games will also be an opportunity to select Team Zimbabwe that will represent the country at the Pan African Games in 2022.

Meanwhile, the association has been received a shot in the arm after Delta Beverages through the Coca-Cola Women’s Link unveiled a sponsorship package worth one comma two million Zimbabwe Dollars.

Ropafadzo Gwanetsa, Schweppes Zimbabwe Corporate Affairs Manager said: “This is a fulfilment of our burning desire as caring sisters, mothers and daughters to the community of intellectually disabled. We realised the Special Olympic Zimbabwe needed a project that can bring forth other developments.”

Special Olympics Zimbabwe is also on a nationwide drive encouraging athletes to get vaccinated ahead of the national games.
