THE Zimbabwe senior Women Football team, the Mighty Warriors kicked off their COSAFA Women’s Championship on a poor note after a three-nil defeat by Tanzania in their first match in South Africa this Wednesday.

The ninth edition of the COSAFA Women’s Championship entered Day Two this Wednesday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa but it did not end well for the Mighty Warriors after a three-nil drubbing by Tanzania.

The Mighty Warriors lost to the same opponents one- nil in a previous regional encounter.

But with the Mighty Warriors having gone for almost two years without competitive action, the going was always going to be tough against Tanzania who have been active throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mighty Warriors Coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda conceded defeat saying it was a tough match.

Last year’s beaten finalists Botswana cruised to Seven-nil comprehensive victory over guest nation South Sudan in the other Group B Match played today.

There are three groups in this year’s competition, with the winners progressing to the semi-finals, alongside the best placed runners-up.

The tournament gives the teams the much needed opportunity to prepare for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers which get underway next month.
