Infrastructure development programme underway creates business opportunities

By Owen Mandovha

THE ongoing infrastructure development programme being undertaken by the government is providing business opportunities for local companies and creating employment for Zimbabweans.

The National Development Strategy One cites job creation as one of the government’s top priorities and lists the various sectors where such jobs will be created.

Besides providing a facelift to Zimbabwe’s roads, dams and housing sectors, as well as creating additional economic capacity, the government’s massive infrastructure rollout has thrilled local construction machinery suppliers, which have doubled their order books and increased their headcount in just a year.

“I would like to confirm that we have witnessed a surge in business since Government started to rehabilitate roads and build dams. In terms of employment creation the company has increased its workforce in response to the increasing business,” said Henry Madovi, Country Manager for Barzem.

The Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP) and several dam construction projects currently underway in various parts of the country are being undertaken by indigenous companies which have since employed thousands of people with the Zimbabwe Building and Construction Association acknowledging the development.

“Many local construction companies have managed to get contracts from Government and in the process have employed skilled and unskilled personnel,” said Dr Tinashe Manzungu, Vice President, Zimbabwe Building and Construction Association (ZBCA).

Recovery of the agricultural sector, capacity improvement in manufacturing and new mining projects are all contributing to job creation as Government under the Second Republic is walking to the talk in its pledge to grow the economy and create employment.
