The 9th edition of the COSAFA Women’s championships kicks off today in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa with 12 teams including the Mighty Warriors battling for honours.

The Mighty Warriors will be gunning for their second COSAFA title after winning the 2011 edition on home soil.

Hosts South Africa, will be in action today with the focus on winning the tournament for a record eighth time.

The tournament kicked off at midday with Angola taking on Mozambique before South Africa clash with Malawi later in the day.

The Mighty Warriors get their campaign underway with a date against Tanzania with hopes high that the team will perform better than last year when they were knocked out at the group stage.

Mighty Warriors coach Sithetelelwe Sibanda said: “We aim to do better than last year and we have been working hard to do well. We have worked hard and I believe we will leave a mark at the tournament.”

The technical team has opted for experience as compared to the last campaign where the squad was made up of under-20 players.
