Transacting public expect enforcement of Consumer Protection Act to instil market discipline

Consumers say enforcement of Zimbabwe’s Consumer Protection Act will be key to stamping out errant businesses.

Unfair business practices, overpricing, selling of substandard goods and services are some of the key challenges affecting consumers.

Realising the need to instill discipline in the markets, government is operationalising a Consumer Protection Act that seeks to ensure transparency in trading.

Consumer Protection Commission Chairperson Dr Mthokozisi Nkosi outlines how the institution seeks to ensure the transacting public derives benefits.

“Our challenge in the past was due to lack of resources that could enable our institution to forge ahead with modalities towards the protection of such rights. However, we are now confident that something can be done for the benefit of the transacting public,” Consumer Protection Commission chairman, Mthokozisi Nkosi said.

The Act seeks among other factors to facilitate enforcement of consumer rights in addition to recourse in courts of law.
