Mighty Warriors in tricky Cosafa Championship draw

The Zimbabwe national women football team, the Mighty Warriors, have been placed in a tricky group for the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship set for Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa from the 15th to the 26th of next month.

On their day, the Mighty Warriors are good enough to compete with any team but these are not normal times, with Women’s football having been on ice since 2019.

Zimbabwe will therefore venture into the unknown when they face last season’s runners-up Botswana as well as guest nations Tanzania and South Sudan in Group B of the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship.

With only the top team and the best-placed runner-up guaranteed a place in the semifinals, the Mighty Warriors who won the tournament on home soil in 2011 would need to be at their best.

Hosts and defending champions South Africa have been drawn in a tricky Group A alongside Angola, Malawi and Mozambique in Group A.

Group C is headed by 2019 finalists Zambia who are fresh from an impressive show at the Tokyo Olympics.

The other teams in group C are Namibia, Eswatini and another guest nation Uganda, a last minute addition after the Comoros Islands withdrew from the tournament.
