Chevrons embarrassed

By Lawrence Trusida

The Zimbabwe national cricket team, the Chevrons, have suffered a series whitewash on home soil after Bangladesh won the third and final One Day International match by five wickets at Harare Sports Club.

If it was a movie, no one would be watching it again because the script is just the same.

As has become the norm if not tradition, Zimbabwe seemed to have things under control, but failed to take advantage of key moments to get over the line.

Regis Chakabva, Ryan Burl and Sikander Raza’s fifties were in vain as the Chevrons suffered a five wicket defeat which condemned them to their first series whitewash at home to Bangladesh.

Tamim Iqbal’s 112 off 97 balls set up Bangladesh’s 299 chase before Nurul Hasan, playing his first ODI in nearly five years, put the finishing touches with his 39-ball unbeaten 45 to give the visitors the win.

“We were 15-20 runs short and sadly that’s the story of the series so far. We really need to improve on that. They paced the innings beautifully. Tamim showed his class today,” said captain, Brendan Taylor.

“We can take some positives out of it though. Regis has really found another gear; I am really pleased for him. Raza and Burl performed well after coming from injuries.”

The series loss means Zimbabwe failed to get a single point on the International Cricket Council super league table where the top eight nations will earn a direct flight to the 2023 World Cup.

The Chevrons who are on 13th position will now shift attention to the T20 series which begins on Thursday.
