The commuting public has welcomed government’s move to reduce Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) fares, with the public transporter deploying more buses for its urban operations.

The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) announced a reduction in fares which is with immediate effect after consultations with its main shareholder, the government.

The public transporter also revealed in a statement intiatives being put in place to comply with Covid-19 measures while ensuring efficiency.

However, it is the reduction in fares and the redeployment of intercity buses to the urban areas that has excited passengers.

It is a welcome move because as the fares were just too high.At least now the illegal operators will be out of the picture because they were putting our lives at risk due to their dangerous driving. We really appreciate the move by government.

A survey carried out by ZBC News in Harare also revealed that there are more ZUPCO buses after inter-city travel was banned as confirmed by ZUPCO Acting Chief Executive officer Mr Evaristo Madangwa who also outlined the strategic road map for the utility.

All intercity buses will be redeployed to urban operations to increase carrying capacity and efficiency , while we will be operating under the curfew guidelines by sanitising passengers, temperature checks and enforcement of masks wearing,he said.

The state-owned utility says it is also embarking on an aggressive technology drive to ensure an effective ticketing and monitoring system.
