SOUTHERN Energy is targeting the third quarter of 2021 for the completion of the first phase of the multi-million-dollar Solar Plant project in Hwange District which is expected to add 100MW to the national grid.
The solar plant project which is envisaged to be one of the largest solar parks in Zimbabwe is taking shape with the investor confident of adding 25MW to the national grid by August this year under phase one of the 100MW solar project.
Southern Energy Chairperson Mr Barry Nyabonda stressed the firm’s desire to play a significant role in the provision of cleaner and cheaper energy to the national grid.
“When we are finished here, we expected to have upwards of 100MW of solar connected to the national grid. We are currently in the initial phase of 25MW of which we plan to connect the initial electricity to the grid sometime in August this year,” he said.
Matebeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Richard Moyo commended the investors for responding’s to government call for increased investments in renewable energy.
“I also understand that there are plans to assist villagers with boreholes and solar electricity. On behalf of the province and government in general l want to assure you of our full support and look forward to connecting the first electricity output to the national grid in the coming months,” he said.
The solar plant project which is less than 10 kilometres from the Victoria Falls International Airport is also expected to complement ongoing efforts aimed at transforming Victoria Falls into a sustainable green destination.
