With a number of sport codes gearing up for the resumption of competitive action, squash is set to return with the Zim Open tournament slatted for August in Harare.

Normalcy is slowly returning to the sports fraternity after a long break due to the Covid-19 pandemic with a treat for squash enthusiasts on the cards in August as the Zimbabwe Open takes centre stage.

The Squash Rackets Association of Zimbabwe is confident of hosting a successful tournament.

“We have done everything in our possession to ensure that things are in place. However, due to the pandemic we could not host our games as is the but we are happy that we were given the greenlight by government and what is left now is for us to finalise on a few modalities for the safe and smooth return of the game.

“Our Zim Open tourney is on the cards and we are anticipating it go be big event cause of the long lay-off,” said association chairperson William Pepukai.

Just like with most sports codes, there is, however, no joy for juniors.

He added, “There are no junior tournaments yet because most of these players are from schools, so if the school calendar is not open to sports yet then it becomes difficult for us to arrange tournaments. We are therefore hoping things will get better so that we start working with the juniors.”

The tournament will also be used to select a national team to represent the country at the Senior World Championships scheduled for New Zealand in December.
