More than 35 illegal tobacco buyers and sellers fined for illegal dealings

By Stanley James

Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) is stamping its authority after more than 30 illegal tobacco buyers and sellers were fined as part of efforts to restore sanity in the industry.

A list of illegal tobacco traders that have been fined was released by the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) this Monday, with the board indicating that the clampdown is being extended to all selling points across the country.

TIMB spokesperson Chelesani Moyo said, “Since the start of the selling season, it has not been well as there are those flouting regulations but we hope to stamp out all.”

Tobacco Association of Zimbabwe President, Mr George Seremwe expects the stamping out of illegal traders to restore sanity.

“It is coming at the right time and we endorse this as a positive step for the industry,” he said.

Tobacco sales have already gone past US$49 million despite an outcry by some farmers over pricing models.

The TIMB statement says the listed individuals have been illegally buying and selling tobacco during the 2021 marketing season in contravention of Section 36 (1) & 44 (1) of the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Act [Chapter 18:20] and Section 5 (1) of Statutory Instrument 61 of 2004.
