More than four million United States dollars has been generated within the first two days of the 2021 tobacco marketing season which is set to be one of the best selling seasons for the golden leaf in recent years.
An analysis of the first two days of the 2021 tobacco selling season has revealed an increase of over 400 percent in deliveries and the value realised as compared to last year’s figures.
More than 374 000 kilogrammes of tobacco deliveries came through last year, while a massive 1.9 million kilogrammes of the golden leaf was delivered this year.
The total value generated in the first two days last year was 783 000 United States dollars with the current marketing season having garnered 4.6 Million United states dollars.
The good rains that the country received have also manifested in higher prices as the current marketing season’s average price has increased by 26.9 percentage points from last year’s 1.75 United States Dollars to this year’s 2.22 United States dollars.
Contract tobacco sales continue to dominate auction sales, having achieved the highest price of six United States dollars 30 cents per kilogramme, while auction sales have reached a high of four United States dollars 95 cents as the best price two days into the marketing season.
The only downside for the marketing season is the reduction of registered growers from 148 000 to a figure above 145 000.
