Young Zimbabwean swimming sensation Donata Katai is leading a team of 3 swimmers in their quest to qualify for the Olympics at the South Africa Olympic trials.
With the other two swimmers being Liam O’Hara and Paige van der Westhuizen, Katai is the most confident.
There is no pressure at all, I am taking it is like any other competition, we are ready, yes we didn’t have the best of preparations due to the lockdown but we are ready, said Katai.
South Africa seems to be the destination of choice for swimmers this week with 12 others having left for the South African National Junior Championships which get underway on Wednesday.
Team captain Tanatsirwa Chitsurura, sadly misses out on the Olympic trials due to numbers limitations in line with COVID-19 regulations.
I am not disappointed, it’s just about going there to make the times remember there is also junior world Championship, so there are many competitions to prepare for, I have to worry about now and prepare for the future, she noted.
Since the days of the most decorated African Olympian Kirsty Coventry, no other Zimbabwean Athlete let alone swimmer has left a mark at the Olympics.
