Chess tourney to be held under strict Covid-19 regulations

Chess players will have a different Easter Holiday as they will battle for honours in the first over-the-board tournament during the Covid-19 era from the 2nd to the 4th of this month after the government gave the greenlight for the resumption of the game a few weeks ago.

The Zimbabwe Chess Federation is one of the first few associations which will host high profile tournaments under strict Covid-19 protocols and guidelines, as directed by the government.

“We are very pleased to be hosting our Easter Open tournament physically. It shows how serious and determined we are to take the sport further and grow the game.

“After doing all that was required of us we remained hopeful of getting clearance from the police, which we received yesterday.

“The fiesta is expected to be huge as most top players are expected to grace the event. As you know it has been long so players are eager to prove their mettle,” said Thabo Elisha, Zimbabwe Chess Federation Public Relations Manager.

The chess mother body has been participating in online tournaments since last year and the Easter Open will see the return of the traditional over-the-board chess.

The Easter Open is just an appetiser as the ZCF is also preparing to host the Africa Armatures Chess Championship at the end of July.
