Harare Basketball Association prepares for resumption of action

By Skilder Makona

The Harare Basketball Association has hit the ground running by putting in place safety measures as they prepare for the resumption of the sport.

While many sports enthusiasts celebrated the announcement of the resumption of high-risk sport codes, they might have to wait a little longer for the actual action to resume with national sports associations now seized with the required safety measures.

The Harare Basketball Association is one such sports body that has put its foot on the pedal to ensure the safety of players and officials as the game resumes.

“As you know we are just a provincial body for Harare, we also follow the dictates of our mother body, the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe on which direction to take after everything has been put in place. Right now, our teams are on the ground disinfecting venues and assessing which ones will be suitable to host matches. Because of this disease, chances are high that we might not be using other satellite venues like Mufakose, Dzivarasekwa, among others,” HBA Spokesperson Carlos Munda said.

While it is now confirmed that Basketball action will resume, the game will return without some familiar faces who have been retired out of the game by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This pandemic has been a major blow for everyone, financially others are fizzled out while others ventured into other things and ultimately being forced out of the game. On the other hand, some have been forced to quit, so we will see who will make it back but it is our hope that everyone gets back on board.”

What will also be missed is the electric atmosphere that comes with fans who normally fill up popular Basketball venues such as Richwood and the City Sports Centre.
