HIGH risk sports could be resuming action by the end of this week depending on National Sports Associations (NSAs) preparedness.
Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) Chairperson, Gerald Mlotshwa explained this Monday in a zoom meeting that the resumption of high risk sports that have not been active in the past year depends on NSAs level of preparedness mainly focusing on their financial muscle and plans to follow SRC regulations.
Some of the high risk sports that were affected by the covid-19 pandemic include football, volleyball, handball, netball, hockey, boxing, basketball, karate, rugby and hockey.
Zimbabwe Handball Federation (ZHF) Secretary General Edson Chiroodza said, “We are more than ready to resume handball activities following that we have set all protocols in place in line with World Health Organization standards.’
ZHF also created a bio-safe zone for the national teams and they would like to start training since they had initially been approved by SRC to resume their activities and they have also secured enough masks, sanitisers and thermometers.
Zimbabwe Volleyball Association Secretary General Enias Kondo said that they are not ready to resume their activities straight away as their covid-19 committee is still doing impact evaluation and assessment to see what needs to be done before they resume activities.
“Our covid-19 committee will be meeting this Thursday to work on the final document of protocols to be followed by our players and staff and also we still need to consult the clubs to see if they are ready to resume now,” said Kondo.
Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Communication and Competitions Manager Xolisani Gwesela said ZIFA is ready for the resumption of football. “We have received the document from SRC, we are studying it and we will abide by the regulations. However, we are not going to have our normalcy back we are living in covid-19 times now so there are things we used to do before covid-19 that we can’t do anymore.”
All NSAs that will resume activities have to submit their protocols and guidelines to be followed to SRC.
