Government has promised to address concerns raised by sugarcane out-growers as part of efforts to boost production in the industry.
Sugarcane out-growers in the Lowveld are confident of improved yields if government addresses the issue of division of proceeds, high input costs, milling agreements and taxation.
The farmers, who held a closed-door meeting with Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, are pinning their hopes on the anticipated amendment of the Sugar Production Control Act.
On its part, government is working on ensuring improved access to electricity, water for irrigation and transport challenges affecting farmers.
“We spoke with the farmers and agreed that as government we must ensure there electricity, water and transportation of sugar cane particularly from Mkwasine to the mill,” said the minister.
The Sugar Production Control Act is being amended to review production, milling, marketing and sharing revenue from proceeds, as government is expected to resolve a long-standing impasse between sugar-producing firms and out-growers.
