Young footballers call for resumption of local football

Young footballers have called for the resumption of local football amid concerns the development side of the game is suffering.
For 16 year old Delan Masumba and other young footballers in Mutare, it is not just for the love of the game or possessing talent but football has become an antidote for moral decadence and juvenile delinquencies.
“We just hope that sports resume again because it keeps us from misbehaving. There is a lot that we learn and we just want to thank the executive for remembering us during this time
“We just want sports to resume is has been difficult not being able to be in the field.”
Manicaland Sports and Recreation Commission Provincial Coordinator, Shupikai Berejena, who engaged the young footballers in Mutare, highlighted the importance of harnessing young talent.
“For any sport to develop there is need for a strong foundation and that foundation comes when we have clubs and we encourage clubs to affiliate so that they will be able to fulfil its mandate. We also appreciate the gesture as this is what we expect for clubs to appreciate their affiliates.”
Stakeholders who were part of the programme pledged their continued support towards nurturing young talent.
“We are thankful of all the support that we are getting from government and we hope to produce quality players who will be able to raise the Zimbabwean flag high. We will continue working with the young players to ensure we produce the best of the best.”
The sports fraternity has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic with the country’s most popular sport the worst affected.
