THE Warriors technical department is expected to announce the national squad that will go into camp ahead of the back to back Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers set for next month.
The team is bracing for two crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers which will see them taking on Botswana on the 25th of next month before hosting Zambia a few days later.
With group H leaders Algeria having already qualified for the next AFCON, second placed Zimbabwe with 5 points, Botswana on 4 and Zambia with 3 points are battling for the other ticket to Africa’s biggest football showcase.
Warriors’ General Manager Wellington Mpandare indicated that they will name a bigger squad due to uncertainties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The selection process started when we were in Cameroon where the coaches sat down and came up with a list of players, now we want to depart from the usual where we rush to publish names of selected players without getting feedback from clubs. As of last week we were sending invites to players and this time we are going to call a bigger squad than usual because of the uncertainty surrounding travels and injuries,he said.
Defender Brendan Galloway is one of the players expected to be called up for the Warriors after seeing his dream of representing England vanish when he was transferred to Championship side Luton Town.
However, even if he is called up, questions surround his availability alongside Marvelous Nakamba, Jordan Zemura, Tendayi Darikwa and Adam Chiksen as England has come up with strict Covid-19 regulations for people coming from 33 red zone countries including Zimbabwe who are expected to go through mandatory 10-day quarantine.
Meanwhile, Captain Knowledge Musona and star forward Khama Billiat are also doubtful despite making significant progress in their rehabilitation from injury.
