ZIMBABWEAN football coaches based in different countries around the region have received rave reviews for their outstanding work with some of them challenging for top honors.
Former Warriors and Dynamos Coach, Kalisto Pasuwa has led Nyasa Big Bullets to back-to-back Malawi Super league titles and currently trails log leaders Red Lions by 6 points, with 2 games in hand going into the 9th round of matches.
Peter Kanjere of Associated Press and a contributor to the CAF website says Pasuwa is cult hero in Malawi.
Pasuwa came to the biggest club in Malawi and won them back to back titles, it’s not easy to please the Bullets fans because they want you to win and he had done that, now he has introduced youngsters after phasing out veterans and he is still dominating. For me the two Zimbabwean coaches who have come to me to Malawi Pasuwa and Gumbo are cult heroes,he said.
In South Africa, Kaitano Tembo ended Supersport United’s three year trophy drought after leading them to victory in the MTN 8 last season and he seems to be gunning for the big one now.
Supersport are currently 2 points behind Mamelodi Sundowns going into the Tshwane derby this weekend and South African Journalist, Mthokozisi Dube of Far Post Magazine believes Tembo has what it takes to lift the league title.
When he was given the job he finished seventh, the following year he finished 5th. It’s been the story of gradual improvement and now they are second and challenging Sundowns and I actually think they can sustain the challenge and hopefully win the title, noted Dube.
Pan African Football’s Nhlati Tinabantu says what makes Tembo’s story unique is that he has achieved success with a very limited budget.
He has managed to win without a big purse and already he has silverware in his cabinet, what makes him unique is that he has also managed to control the big name dressing room and everyone is enjoying playing under him, he said.
Bafana Bafana and Supersport striker, Bradley Grobler also echoed the same sentiments.
He hasn’t been given enough credit for what he has done, there have been a lot of experienced coaches he’s and failed but he is getting the best and we are enjoying, said Grobler.
Elsewhere, the Tarisai Chingara-coached Denver Sundowns were top of the Eswatini premiership before it was halted in December due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a clear sign that Zimbabwean Coaches have what it takes to excel beyond the country’s borders.
