Sports Ministry to promote participation of people with albinism in sport

The Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation has taken a huge step towards promoting the participation of people with albinism in sport.

Government through the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation has embarked on a drive to broaden the base by ensuring all groups in the society are involved in sport, recreation and physical activities.

It is against this notion that the ministry, as well as the Sports and Recreation Commission, have fomented a relationship with the Miss Albinism Zimbabwe Trust.

“This capacity development workshop has been developed targeting people with albinism to increase their inclusive participation in sport for all programmes and physical activity. It also seeks to create a platform for better understanding of albinism as well as subdue notorious myths and superstitious beliefs which has incessantly caused the victimisation of this population group,” said Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Dr Thokozile Chitepo.

With albinism often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition which cause social exclusion, the initiative has been described as the panacea of embracing the cosmopolitan human nature and ensuring mass involvement in sport.

“We are over the moon today that the government has heard our plea. Over the years we have been disadvantaged by such illusions associated with albinism limiting the participation of people with albinism. We believe we are equal and our skin pigmentation does not deter us from being actively involved in sport and physical activities. Given equal chances, we have a vast array of talent which needs to be tapped into for the development and growth of sport in the country,” said Brenda Mudzimu the Founder & Director of Miss Albinism Zimbabwe Trust.

The workshop which is targeting 20 people with albinism as part of the trainer development model seeks to create a roadmap for the delivery of nationwide sport for all programme code-named “THIS GOLD IS ABLE” under the “DARE TO DREAM INITIATIVE”
