COAL mining firm Hwange Colliery is strengthening its wellness programme to promote a productive workforce, as part of the roadmap towards return to profitability.

After registering improved production figures during the first half of the year, the coal mining firm is bullish of continued recovery.

As part of efforts to promote a healthy and productive workforce, the mining concern has set a target to enhance its wellness programme.

In a speech read on his behalf during the 2020 Hwange Colliery Wellness Day, Acting Managing Director, Dr Charles Zinyemba said the programme entails screening for non-communicable diseases and mental health services.

“The first step we took around the same time last year has seen an improved uptake and interest in wellness related activities. This is in the background of our continued administration roadmap, which was instituted by government to ensure and assist Hwange Colliery to get back to productivity and profitability,” he said.

National AIDS Council (NAC) Hwange District AIDS Coordinator, Nehemiah Ndlovu pledged the organisation’s commitment to work with the coal mining firm in HIV/AIDS interventions.

“We are pleased with the relationship that we have with this coal mining firm and we stand ready to deepen our partnership in HIV/AIDS intervention,” said Ndlovu.

Chief Hwange commended the firm for the wellness programme saying it is key to a healthy community.

In response to the global pandemic, the coal mining firm has set up a robust campaign on Covid-19 education, surveillance and a dedicated response team.
