Zimbabweans urged to embrace a culture of innovation

A culture of innovation has been cited as key in the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and broader economic development.

The 2nd Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) Hackathon finale edition held in Bulawayo this Friday saw top 5 groups of innovators from across the country being honour for their determination to contribute to national development through innovations.

The Minister of Information Communication technology, Postal and Courier Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere was impressed by how Zimbabweans have sought to embrace a culture of innovation, which he described as important in the attainment of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The scale and ambition of the SDGs require innovation if the 2030 agenda is to be achieved. Indeed to achieve these ambitious goals. New modalities for development are required, including bringing innovation to the foreground of development projects,” he said.

POTRAZ Director General, Dr Gift Machengete said in view of the SDGs and the COVID-19 pandemic, the main objectives of the second edition of the POTRAZ Hackathon competition were to drive economic growth and development through innovation.

“From the forgoing, it is apparent that post covid-19, ICT would be fundamental in ensuring business continuity as well as continuity of service delivery in sectors such as health and education among others,” he said.

The Hackathon competition ran under the theme: #HackingforSDGspostcovid-19 and beyond, and the winning 5 inventions were the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Effective Delivery of Medical Essentials, Automatic Egg Incubator, Smart Agriculture Solutions, The Virtual Clinic and Drone Virtual Tours.
