FOOTBALL legend, George Shaya, is set to be honoured for his role in the development of the local game at the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards set for Johannesburg this Saturday.
Years after his dazzling performances on the football pitch and now walking with the help of clutches after his right leg was amputated, Dynamos great, George Shaya‘s legacy lives on.
Despite going through a difficult year affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the five-time Soccer Star of the Year will have something to smile about as he will be honoured with a lifetime Achievers Awards award in Johannesburg this Saturday.
A day before the awards ceremony, Shaya and his wife, Agnes felt humbled by the gesture, saying they never expected football will get them such recognition.
“So much humbled by the gesture i never expected that evwn after retirement i will continue to get accolades,” he said.
“I pay tribute to my teammates who helped me all the way and shaped me to be who I am today.
“I just thought when he, George, retired it will end there, I didn’t know football will take us this far I thank God and everyone who played a part in the making of Shaya,” said his wife.
Shaya will have a luncheon with other yesteryear football greats who include Ian Gorowa and Charles Yohanne before the awards ceremony.
Shaya and his wife left the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport for Johannesburg this morning and will stay at Protea Hotel Melrose Arch in Four Square.
