LOW-COST airline Fastjet has resumed Victoria Falls-Johannesburg flights in a development expected to boost the tourism industry after a battering from the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The airline’s Embraer ERJ145 touched down at the Victoria Falls International Airport this Thursday afternoon to a rousing welcome and the traditional cannon salute.

Twenty-eight passengers among them 15 South Africans, 2 Canadians and 2 French citizens were on board.
Passengers who spoke to ZBC News said there are delighted to be back in Zimbabwe’s tourism capital and commended the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) for the sound health and safety measures.

“We are excited to be part of the historic flight and obviously we are delighted to be back in this beautiful tourism town which is home to one of the seven natural wonders of the world,” they said.

In a statement, the airline says the flights will operate thrice-weekly between the two cities, with the 50-seater Embraer aircraft set to be deployed on the route.

Tourism stakeholders who were at the airport expressed confidence that the return of more airlines to one of the world’s popular tourist destinations will assist in the recovery of the tourism sector.

“We are so excited that more airlines continue to resume flights post-covid 19. Resumption of regional and international flights remains critical in the growth and recovery of the tourism industry. We remain optimistic that our industry which was hard-hit by covid-19 will soon recover,” they said.

As part of the tourism growth and recovery strategy, Zimbabwe is targeting to extend marketing efforts to regional and international source markets.

According to the responsible authorities, targeted marketing will be done to markets that will recover first after covid-19 pandemic.
