A 37- year old Harare man, Leonard Mhara has defied the odds to become a successful entrepreneur whose humble beginnings should inspire many.
The adage, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step applies to the story of businessman and entrepreneur, Leonard Mhara who began his journey as a tout.
He is now an established entrepreneur in the fencing business providing employment to other youths.
As he narrates his long-winding journey from being a tout to an entrepreneur, Mhara commended the government through the Ministry Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development for creating an enabling environment for the youths to participate in economic development.
“It is true I started off at one point in my life as a tout. Through grace and an enabling environment, I managed to buy my equipment and started a fencing business which has paid dividends. I now employ others at the same time taking care of my parents.”
Commenting on the success story, Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister, Dr Sithembiso Nyoni praised the businessman for taking hid of government’s call for youths to venture into self-sustaining projects.
“This is one of the many success stories that we have witnessed and it is commendable. Imagine coming from a life of touting and drug abuse, Mhara has turned his fortunes and this is a lesson to all the youths.”
The SMEs sector is among the most affected by the COVID-19 induced lockdown but entrepreneurs like Mhara remain determined to weather the storm.
