GOVERNMENT has pledged to support the revival of the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) as the National Development Strategy One requires an efficient transport sector capable of sustaining a rebounding economy.
As the nation warms up to the National Development Strategy 1(NDS1), an efficient bulk transportation system is key to sustain local production.
This was said by Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube when he toured the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) integrated mechanical workshop in Bulawayo this Friday.
“Onward looking, we are preparing for a more productive economy. Therefore a capacitated NRZ fits well to our strategy as there will be more demand for transportation of bulk goods.
“We have just toured NRZ workshop and I have appreciated that the capacity is there and the government will support its recapitalisation…,” he said.
NRZ board chairperson Advocate Martin Dinha said he is optimistic that the good old days are beckoning for the country’s railway giant.
“We have just hosted a strategic tour and the engagement we had with the minister has raised our hopes that we will be back into the game in no time. We have engaged our counterparts in Turkey, Indonesia and China and the pledged support from government will see us gaining traction…,” he said.
NRZ requires modern wagons and locomotives to be competitive in the region.
Minister Ncube’s visit concluded by an experience of President Mnangagwa’s iconic dinning coach and museum visit.
