Dr Dumiso Dabengwa Declared a National Hero

Zimbabwean liberation war stalwart, ZAPU president and ex-cabinet minister, Dr Dumiso Dabengwa has been declared a National Hero. He died on the 23rd of May in Nairobi, Kenya when he was on his way to Zimbabwe from India where he had been seeking medical attention.

Addressing the media at Joshuwa Mqabuko International Airport where people were waiting for Dr Dabengwa’s body, the Vice President Hon. Kembo Mohadi said the government has declared Dr Dumiso Dabengwa a National Hero.

“The government and the ruling party, ZANU-PF after having confirmed the demise of our comrade, Dumiso Dabengwa, we all agreed that he be conferred with the national hero status”, said the Vice President Hon. Kembo Mohadi

Dr Dabengwa is one of the pioneers of liberation war guerrillas which led to the independence of Zimbabwe in 1980. Dr Dumiso Dabengwa was among the first cadres to be sent to the Soviet Union Socialist Republic in 1964, he was a brave war commander, and this saw him being called “Black Russian”.

He held the ministerial position as minister of Home affairs for two terms. He retired from Government in the year 2000 and formed revived ZAPU in 2008, which he was leading as the president. Dr Duniso Dabengwa formed the Dumiso Dabengwa Foundation which was launched in 2018 and its main objective is to promote democracy.
