The Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Obadiah Moyo has called for Bulawayo council to solve water and sewer problems at Burombo Flats in Nguboyenja suburb in Bulawayo where he was touring. He described the Flats as unfit for human habitation.
At the Burombo Flats, about fifty people share a toilet following the closure of the male toilets by the city council years ago. Council officials told Dr Moyo that evacuation of all residents was the only way for them to renovate the Flats but challenges are that evacuation had not been successful as new occupants would just come through.
High numbers of TB cases have been recorded at the Flats due to overcrowding. There has not been any cholera outbreak case confirmed yet but Dr Moyo believes the conditions at Burombo Flats are conducive for a Cholera outbreak hence council should work on improving living conditions.
Dr Moyo said he will take the matter to the inter-ministerial committee chaired by the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Cde July Moyo who will advise on support they can offer.
